Domiziana's concert will take place as part of the c/o pop festival in Cologne on April 27.
Born in Freiburg, raised in Sicily, moved to Berlin at 17, Domiziana is also and above all a child of the internet. While music was only a pastime for a long time, the 25-year-old newcomer has found her very own sound somewhere between the digital look and feel of PC Music, but also the avant-pop of Lady Gaga and the iconic momentum of the Club Kids in New York in the late 80s and early 90s: Hyperpop with German lyrics that is second to none.
The fact that Domiziana's artistic DNA is made up of precisely these pop cultural components of the last decades is no coincidence. When she was seven years old, the daughter of a German and an Italian moved to Sicily with her family, where she grew up in Catania at the foot of Mount Etna and attended an arch-Catholic school. On the one hand. On the other hand, there is the internet and above all Lady Gaga, who provide a view of a completely contrary world.
"Lady Gaga always showed her sexuality in a very self-determined way, was extremely courageous and always shocked people," Domiziana recalls. "On top of that, a community of her fans also formed on the internet during that time and people like me felt like I wasn't alone. I could log on to Tumblr and fangirl with others." At the same time, there is also a soft spot for Taylor Swift and her songwriting and David Bowie, whose poster hangs in her room, or the Club Kids from New York in the 80s and 90s.
"When I moved to Berlin at 17, it was like a dream come true," Domiziana recalls. "The city made everything possible that until then had only taken place in my childhood bedroom." Also in terms of music. As a child, Domiziana played the violin; later, inspired by her hero:in, she wrote her own songs. As an escape from everyday life. A way to get out. Sometimes she sends them to friends or uploads them to YouTube.
"Music has always moved me more as a hobby, but it wasn't allowed to play such a big role. But all of a sudden it was clear: I have to give myself this chance now, so that I can at least say that I tried."
It was also during this time that Domiziana developed her love for hyperpop. Originating in the late 2010s in the haze around the PC Music label and A.G. Cook, the genre has evolved over the past decade into an expression of the zeitgeist that goes far beyond music. "Hyperpop fascinated me from the beginning," Domiziana tells me. "All the sounds you know are exaggerated - whether it's the snare or the topline: everything is different, loud and surprising. At first it might put listeners off, but once you're in it, it feels just right - and in combination with the digital-visual component, you're immersed in a whole new world.
The concert is part of the funding project "c/o pop 2023 musichubgermany" and is supported by the Initiative Musik gemeinnützige Projektgesellschaft GmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
