When it comes to authentically reflecting the demands of social minorities, political initiatives or NGOs in the culture industry and thus also in the music industry, we quickly reach the limits of social washing. Why? Because the actual people affected and spokespersons are not included! If it is at all possible, what would a positively connoted concept of social washing look like?
What exactly is it about? The umbrella term social washing covers all kinds of ethical action - or rather non-action - and goes beyond caring for our natural resources: it also includes labour and human rights, gender equality, measures against modern slavery and much more.
Although awareness has grown considerably in the cultural sector and among the public, there are still many e.g. companies that try to present themselves as better than they really are.
